Duration: 6 Day Break
Wernigerode, the colourful town at the foot of the Harz Mountains
is our feature destination on this Christmas Market extravaganza.
A pleasant and attractive town with its fairytale Castle, historic
market square and town hall, said to be among one of the most
beautiful buildings in Germany, and the venue for over 300 weddings
throughout the year.
ITINERARY:
Saturday: We make our way to Folkestone for the short Eurotunnel
crossing to France, and on to our overnight stay at the centrally
located Ibis Hotel in Liege, arriving in time to explore. Only
a short distance from the hotel is one of Belgium’s largest
Christmas markets (the shopping starts here)!
Sunday: Leaving Liege, we head off to Wernigerode for our 3 night
stay in this delightful town.
Monday: Free time for exploring Wernigerode’s historic
town centre and Christmas market. Why not walk to the castle for
spectacular views over the town and towards the Harz Mountains
and ski resort? A visit to the café/bistro ‘Krummelsches
Haus’, close to the Market Square is a must!
Tuesday: After breakfast, we make the short journey to the Harz
Railway Station for our ride on this delightful narrow gauge railway
to the top of Brocken Mountain - Northern Germany’s highest
point, with every chance of some seasonal snow at the summit!
We will be rewarded with spectacular views of Wernigerode and
surrounding villages plus forest scenery on the journey. The large
building on its peak, now a luxury hotel and restaurant, was once
the border observation post from East to West Germany.
Wednesday: Leaving lovely Wernigerode, we travel to Cologne for
our return overnight stay, arriving in time to shop in one of
Germany’s premier and largest Christmas Markets.
Thursday: All shopped out? With suitable comfort and refreshment
stops en-route, we head to Calais for our crossing to Folkestone
arriving home late evening.
