Duration: 3 Day Minibreak
The Baie de Somme and The Circuit of Remembrance.
A major restoration has revitalized the medieval waterside area
of Amien and its Notre Dame Cathedral, which is now a UNESCO World
Heritage site. It claims to be the largest Gothic edifice built,
and is more than twice the size of Notre Dame Paris! Our weekend
includes a trip on the ‘Hortillonnages’ floating gardens,
a ride on the Somme Bay Steam railway, plus a tour with a local
guide of the ‘Circuit of Remembrance’, visiting important
sites of the Great War.
ITINERARY:
Friday: We make our way via Eurotunnel making suitable refreshment
and comfort stops on the way to arrive at our hotel mid afternoon.
Saturday: After breakfast, our guide will join us for a tour
as we follow the path of remembrance, a moving and emotional experience
discovering places that have marked the history of France.
Sunday: We leave our hotel and take the short journey to the
Floating Gardens which can only be reached by flat bottom boats
called ‘cones’. The gardens extend over 300 hectares
and are intersected by canals and enclosed by branches of the
Rivers Somme and Avre. We continue our day with a steam train
ride along the Baie De Somme. After a pleasant and full day we
make our return journey via Eurotunnel arriving home mid evening.
